First of all, a happy 2014 for all of you! This year we will again organise all kinds of different activities for Industrial Design Alumni, so keep an eye on our website and social media. To kick-off the new year, we have a design challenge for you starting right away! Together with the ambassador of The Netherlands to Qatar, IDEa offers you a chance to show your design skills and possible interesting connections in Qatar through a 3D design challenge. One of the booming fields in Qatar is design and architecture. Rem Koolhaas, Mecanoo, Marcel Wanders and others, all have done major projects here. So will you become the next?
The Residence of the Dutch ambassador serves as a hospitality lounge for Dutch and local visitors. She and her team aim to represent and serve the Dutch interests, primarily Dutch businesses. Design is one of the booming fields in Qatar and therefore she wants to show the future of Dutch Design in her residence and generate an interest in upcoming designers. She came to IDEa, and challenges you to come up with great 3D designs.
Your assignment is to design a 3D printable object that:
1. Represents you as a designer/design company
2. Integrates a link with the Arabic World
3. Has a Dutch feel to it
4. Is aesthetically beautiful and original.
The maximum allowed size is 20cmx20cmx20cm. The top 20 designs will be printed in Qatar and displayed in the Residence. Printing needs to be possible without any further explanation at the 3D printing house in Qatar and in ABSplus and a layer/thickness of 0.178 mm.
– A 3D model of your design suitable for printing
– 2 to 3 High-quality renders of the expected end result
– Motivation and explanation of your design in max 250 words.
Entries should be in before the 15th of February 2014, further details will be explained.
The top 20 entries will be printed in Qatar and displayed at the Residence of the Dutch ambassador together with your name and contact details. (Be sure to have a Twitter account) The best two entries will win a trip of 2 days to Qatar in May/June to present their design and themselves and give a lecture/workshop. Winners will be announced during a Virtual award Ceremony on twitter during the TEDx Binnenhof Catwalk of Innovation on the 31st March.
